AFFLICTION

Knowing it was a hopeless voyage, why did I get on this ship?
Was it merely for the lure, the gratification, the thrill?
What happens when the passengers desert me?
What happens when I hit the dead end, no shore beneath my feet?
What happens when it all breaks down, the vessel, the sails?
What happens when all there’s left are tears and sighs and wails..?
Guess I knew I’d be the loser in the end…
I feel too much, I’m going to be heart broken…

In this doomed voyage what can I do but drown,
unable to swim, unable to grapple, and carry on?
Why, oh why did I follow the will o’ the wisp?
Why, oh why did I get on this forbidden ship?
Sure it gave me treasures worth a lifetime,
but when it’s all over, will I still be fine?
Why is there something so wrong and dark in me?
Why does playing with fire always seem like my thing?

Danger has for too long now followed me,
and I’ve guided it, knowing I’ll be hurt eventually.
Everything is alright by the morning light,
but I’m tormented by demons, in the cover of night.
And I lose – I always lose to their might,
I’m done for now, I’ve lost the fight…
That this pain can be turned to art, is my only solace,
but tell me heart, did I bargain for this pain in the first place?

No – all I went seeking were healing and peace,
and now I’m afraid I’ve fallen from grace…
Lord,
I never wanted pain, I only wanted peace,
so I made a deal with the devil
and it came with a price.
And now the time has come for that price to be paid,
And the devil reveals to me, that the price –
is pain…

  1. This read like a journey of the artist’s mind..one that knows pain is inevitable, can be harnessed, but never sought..the voyage takes one to the land of sadness and irresistible beauty. Without rambling further, must say I loved it! 😍💕

      1. Oh you most certainly are… But that’s the thing about real artists, they don’t realize how good they are! 📝
This poem is more about the journey of grief – the kind we bring upon ourselves… I don’t even know how to put it, which is why I was at a loss as to how to tag it too.. I just remember being a mess of emotions when I had written this… But yes, every experience for me is something that can be fictionalised into art, and you caught on that, which is why I love your comment!
I hope I made sense here though haha! 😊😊

  3. This is how I treat your writing, dear Isha. I take a long walk on a rainy day, I find a cafe, I find a comfortable seat…and together with a freshly baked muffin I start reading, and savouring the real treat of the afternoon.
With you I feel the emotions so vividly it’s as if you are seated with me reciting. Sometimes you pause and I see the flicker of a far off painful memory in your eyes.
That is your writing to me. 🌷😌💕

  4. The emotions jump off the page, the scenery isn’t stage! your transparency in the journey has made you beautiful. This is a beauty that can be seen with the eyes closed. To me this poem illustrates something I think every human has experience: “Desire taken off the chain of wisdom and becoming desperation which equates to getting something without weighing the cost. Your doodles tell a story as well. the doodles is therapeutic. I’m going to stop now. I could do a blog post on your poetry and the essence of isha. lol

  5. I guess when aboard we never anticipate, in our wildest dreams, that the ship may sink, that a storm can ruin us. Blinded that we are by the happiness of the voyage, we sail along, laughing, immersing in the happiness of rising and falling waves. Everything ends, but we live as though we were immortal. May be it is one of the greatest paradoxes of our lives.
